Bill Clinton visits Madeleine Albright Boulevard in Smíchov
Former US President Bill Clinton visited the new boulevard in Prague’s Smíchov district named after prominent politician Madeleine Albright and which is part of the extensive Smíchov City project by Sekyra Group. The boulevard not only celebrates Albright’s legacy, but also symbolises the historical ties between the United States and the Czech Republic.
During his visit to Prague and the Our Security Cannot Be Taken for Granted conference, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Czech Republic’s accession to NATO, Bill Clinton recalled important moments in his work Madeleine Albright, who became the first woman to serve as US Secretary of State. “It’s wonderful that this magnificent new street will be named after Madeleine Albright, a native of this city,” said the former US president.
The new Smíchov Boulevard is not only a symbolic tribute to an important Czech-American politician, but also a key element in the development of the Smíchov City project, which promises new opportunities for Prague residents and will bring modern infrastructure to the heart of the city.
The ceremony was also attended by Michal Žantovský and Madeleine Albright’s daughter, Katie. “Our family is deeply honoured and grateful that a new street in the city centre bears our mother’s name. It is even located in the part of Prague where she was born. And although she only lived here briefly as a child, she returned many times – sometimes officially, but most often privately for pleasure,” she said on behalf of the entire family.
Luděk Sekyra, founder of Sekyra Group and Sekyra Foundation, added: “The opening of Madeleine Albright Boulevard marks a victory over oblivion and celebrates the courage and determination of the women who fought for freedom and democracy. We are proud to be part of this project and to have contributed to honouring the memory of such an important figure.”
