The Association for Urban Planning and Development Planning of the Czech Republic has awarded Smíchov City a prestigious prize for its urban study. The project was also nominated for Urban Project of the Year 2024. Smíchov City, which represents the largest urbanisation project in central Prague since the creation of Vinohrady, succeeded against 14 other competing urban planning projects from across the Czech Republic. Among them was another Sekyra Group project – Rohan City – which was also nominated for Urban Project of the Year 2024.

“For many of us at Sekyra Group, Smíchov City is a project that has been part of our lives for 21 years and will probably continue to be so for another nine or ten years until it is completed. We therefore greatly appreciate the award, which is a wonderful recognition of our efforts,” said Leoš Anderle, CEO of Sekyra Group, at the award ceremony. He also pointed out that CZK 50 billion will be invested in the development of the Smíchov brownfield site, CZK 35 billion from private sources and the remaining CZK 15 billion from public funds. The latter will be invested in related infrastructure projects, including the modernisation of the railway station and the construction of a transport terminal with a large-capacity car park. There are also plans to build a primary school.

The Smíchov City project consists of two parts: the North, predominantly residential, and the South, a modern commercial district. Once completed, the Smíchov City district will offer work, housing, services and complete civic amenities, all within easy reach. A pleasant public space will also be an integral part of the project. The bustling Smíchov district will gain new quiet areas suitable for picnics and relaxation. In total, more than two hectares of green space will be added to Smíchov. To ensure the district remains diverse, 21 studies from the Czech Republic and abroad were selected in international architectural competitions to design the first three phases, and are now participating in the project.

The announcement of the prestigious titles and awards in the 10th annual Urban Project of the Year competition was organised by the Foundation for the Development of Architecture and Civil Engineering in cooperation with the Ministry of Regional Development, the Association for Urbanism and Development Planning of the Czech Republic, the Czech Chamber of Authorised Engineers and Technicians Active in Construction, and the Czech Association of Civil Engineers.
